Hadrian's Wall and Hadrian's Wall Path follow a dip in the land at this point and at the bottom of the dip is a lone mature sycamore tree. It is a well known landmark on this section of the Wall, which is largely treeless. There is a disused stone-built well in front of the tree. Sycamore Gap has become known to a wider audience since it appeared in a scene of the film "Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves".
