About Pfaueninsel

The 67 hectare island was bought by Frederick William II in 1793. He planned to use the island as a destination for excursions, had it landscaped, built a castle and added a number of buildings and attractions. The island is also home to some ancient trees, including around 400 oak trees. The white castle that is located on the island can be seen from far. It was built in 1894 and famous for its two towers which are connected by a bridge, the bridge was the first cast iron bridge that has been built in the German capital. Within the park you can see a rose garden, exotic species and a flower garden. Its collection of animals has been re-housed long ago; they formed the basis of the Berlin Zoo. Also to be seen on the island is a dairy that was designed as an artificial ruin in the Gothic style, a stable that looks like a chapel, a Swiss style house, a cavalier's house for guests and some other quirky and slightly eccentric buildings. As part of the "Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin" Peacock Island is listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
