Situated in the St Pauli red light district, near the famous Reeperbahn, this is a 60 metre long street of prostitutes and brothels. It is closed off at both ends and, although women are not forbidden to enter, they do so at their peril and risk being bombarded with water, rotten eggs and worse. The enclosing of the street dates from the days of National Socialism when street prostitution was forbidden in theory, although the practice could not be stamped out. Screening it off kept it enclosed and contained.
