About Hotel Makunudu Island

One of the more low-key Maldivian island resorts, Hotel Makunudu Island still provides an idyllic setting to guests wanting to live out their tropical island fantasies in the flesh.

The charming bungalows are a blend of minimalist design and Maldivian craft heritage. Each features en-suite bathroom with hairdryer, air conditioning, minibar, in-room safe and tea/coffee station.

Reception staff are on hand to assist with any guest queries, and the Avuun Spa offers a wide range of beauty and therapeutic treatments in a gorgeous setting.

Ara Iru Restaurant, meaning “rising sun”, offers an eclectic range of international foods, but has a strong Maldivian focus. Dinner is in the open-air dining room, or private romantic dinners on the beach can also be arranged.

The main attraction is simply the island itself. There are a host of watersports available, including diving to see the amazing coral, and of course the tropical sand beach of fantasy is present as well.

Positive Reviews

Exceptionally beautiful local reef

Unlike many of the other island resorts in the Maldives, guests report that Makunudu's house reef has not been subject to bleaching. As a result, it retains its incredible variety of colours. Together with the sea life in the area, this made for incredible diving.

Small and intimate island

Though one or two found the smallness of the island a slight negative, most guests thought that it made the whole experience that much more personal. The island is small, and the number of guests on it at any one time, are correspondingly small. It was very easy to explore the island, and if that got a bit old, you could always go snorkelling in the clear waters around the reef.

Rooms seem newly refurbished

One or two return visitors say that it looks like the rooms have been relatively recently refurbished. They approved of the update, and felt it only added to what the resort had to offer.

Negative Reviews

Limited benefits for repeat visitors

Firstly, it has to be said that the reviews of Makunudu Island where simply overwhelmingly positive. One has to look very hard indeed to find anything that could be construed as negative. One thing that came up, that will perhaps not affect most guests, was that many of the special benefits previously available to repeat visitors have been discontinued.

Two sides to the island

It was a fine point, but guests mention that there are bungalows on two sides of the island, and one side (the leeward) is a little worse than the other. The most common complaint is that there is limited shade on that side.
