Built in the 11th century in a remote valley of the Massif des Corbières, the Abbey was for centuries inhabited by Cistercian monks. Originally constructed in the romanesque style with barrel vaults, later additions were gothic with pointed arches. The Abbey saw a great deal of history: it was ravaged by the Black Death, was prominent in the opposition to the Albigensian heresy and survived the Revolution. Since its sale and refurbishment in 1908 it has become a visitor site but is no longer a monastic retreat. The Abbey church, cloister, monks’ and laical buildings can be visited and there is an attractive garden. There are a shop and restaurant on site. It is open every day except Christmas Day. Visits are guided only and last about 1 hour: the website has details of the timings throughout the year.
