The Alhambra was built for the Moorish rulers in the 14th century. In Arabic it’s name means “the red fortress”. It is situated to the south of Granada. First built to be the residence of the Muslim rulers, a later addition made it the Palace of Charles V, a Roman Emperor in the 16th century, and it is now a major tourist attraction. It covers a surface of 142 000m² and features the Alcazaba (citadel) to the west, a palace, a mosque, 13 towers and vast sculptured gardens with fountains and streams. Islamic architecture was imposed throughout the fortress, until the Christian conquest in the beginning of the 16th century. The fortress suffered three century’s of modifications and destruction, followed by an earthquake in 1821. Its restoration started in 1847.
