Big Beach (USA)

Big Beach, auch als Makena Beach bekannt, ist der größte Strand Mauis, gut 3 km lang und bis zu 100 m breit. Früher durften dort nur Adelige baden, Sufen war dem König allein vorbehalten. Heute tummeln sich am Big Beach hauptsächlich Einheimische, unter der Woche liegt man fast alleine im weißen Sand. Der Strand liegt im Südwesten der Inseln, am Ende der großen Resort & Spa Resorts die im letzten Jahrzehnt dort gebaut worden. Man erreicht den Strand, indem man nach dem offiziellen Ende des Highway 31 noch gut 8 km der dann schon sehr schmalen Strasse folgt. Der große Parkplatz ist nicht zu übersehen. Öffentliche Verkehrsmittel führen nicht zum Big Beach. Der Strand hat sehr feinen, hellen Sand und eignet sich hervorragend zum Surfen. Aufgrund der z.T. hohen Wellen und der starken Strömung allerdings nicht für Anfänger. Wie immer bei Stränden auf Maui gibt es keine Möglichkeit, Essen oder Getränke vor Ort einzukaufen oder Liegen/Schirme zu mieten. Am nördlichen Ende des Strandes erhebt sich der Earthquake Hill, eine Felsformation aus Lava. Wer drüber klettert erreicht auf der anderen Seite den Little Beach. An dieser kleine Ausgabe von Big Beach ist Nacktbaden geduldet.
