Carmel Beach is a mile-long stretch of white sand, located west of California Highway 1, at the end of Ocean Avenue in Carmel-by-the-Sea. It is a dog-friendly beach with no leash laws, and poop bags are available at the main entrances. Alcohol is also permitted, and bonfires are allowed in specified sections until 10 pm. Backed by native cypress trees, the beach offers views of Pebble Beach to the right and Point Lobos to the left, and often gets crowded at sunset. There are restrooms on the beach itself, and numerous shops and restaurants can be found at the top of the hill in the town of Carmel-by-the-Sea. Entrance to the beach is free. There is a parking lot on Ocean Avenue, which is level with the beach, and alternative free on-street parking is available on Scenic Road, from which the beach is accessible via steep staircases. A view of the beach can be admired from the many benches which line Scenic Road.
