Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (Darjeeling, India)

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway was the first of three Indian narrow-gauge railways to receive recognition by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. The DHR was constructed in the 1880s to link the plains of India with the summer resort of Darjeeling, a major attraction for the wealthy of Calcuatta who wanted to escape the heat of the city. The railway is approximately 86km long and climbs more than 2100 m in altitude, reaching its highest point at Ghum or Ghoom station, before descending for the last 5 km into Darjeeling’s town centre. The tracks are just 2 feet (or 610mm) apart. The steam locomotives which currently travel on the route all date back to no later than 1925 and are in daily use. Locations of particular note on the trail include a number of steep ascents and large ‘loops’ designed to reduce the strain when traveling up-hill. Travelers can travel the entire length of the railway or there are shorter tourist journeys available, some of them with refreshments and tourist stops along the route.
