The ruins of Dundonald Castle overlooks the Ayrshire village of Dundonald. The structure is characterized as a fortified tower house, built in the late 14th century by the Scottish king Robert II. The hilltop location of the castle speaks to its strategic importance as a medieval fortress. The archaeological evidence indicates that it stands on a site previously occupied by a timber hill fort, then by an earlier motte and bailey timber castle, and finally by a stone castle with four towers and a curtain wall. The last of these was destroyed during the wars between England and Scotland. Before the present castle became a royal residence for the early Steward kings, the site served as the seat of the Stewards of Scotland. All parts of the castle ruins are open to visitors. The site belongs to Historic Scotland and is managed by the Friends of Dundonald Castle. The castle is open to visitors on a daily basis between April and October. Facilities include a car park, a visitor center, and a tea room. The castle and grounds may also be rented for a variety of private functions–including weddings, receptions, and as a film location.
