Five Rathas (Mahabalipuram, India)

The Panch Rathas ‘“ or Five Rathas ‘“ is a set of monolithic rock temples which date to the 7th century and record the development of Dravidian architectural styles. They stand on sandy ground in the small town of Mahabalipurum and are included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the monuments of Mahabalipuram. Each Ratha is in a different shape and dedicated to a different god. Some are shaped like pagodas and others like wheeled chariots. The five temples are Draupadi’™s Ratha, Arjuna’™s Rath, Nakul ‘“ Sahadev’™s Ratha, Bhima Ratha and Dharamraja Yudhistar’™s Ratha and are each dedicated specific gods or goddesses. Each is intricately carved with decorations. In addition to the Five Ratha’s there’s a large carved elephant.
