Acknowledged as one of the great painted caves of the region. There are numerous polychrome and monochrome paintings of bison, horses and reindeer, executed with great skill. Particularly famous is a pair of reindeer, the male nuzzling the female. The art has been dated to about 15,000 BC, about the same period as Lascaux. There is no official website as such, and it shares a page in Les Eyzies’ website with two other caves. It is administered from a joint office with the Grotte des Combarelles, which is a quarter of a mile away. Advance booking is essential as numbers of visitors per day are limited. Not suitable for people with mobility problems. The prehistoric sites and painted caves of the Vézère valley are now a UNESCO World Heritage site.
