Giraffe Centre (Nairobi, Kenya)

The Giraffe Centre, located near Hardy Shopping Centre in Nairobi’s Lang’ata surburb, is the creation of a Kenyan Conservation Organisation, the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (Kenya) Ltd. (A.F.E.W. Kenya) The purpose of the Centre is to create awareness and provide free environmental education aimed at sensitising Kenyan youth and the general population on the need to appreciate and conserve Kenya’s biodiversity. It provides local and international visitors an opportunity to come into close contact with, and feed the world’s tallest animal, the Giraffe. It is open from 10.00 am until 5.30 pm each day, with a 500 shilling entrance fee for international visiting adults and half price for children. As well as extensive grounds which you can roam, there are walks and guided tours. Most visitors are there to walk around the high platform, from which it is possible to feed the giraffes in a face-to-face manner. Photographing giraffes, and their feeders, is the main occupation, but the keepers are a mine of information about giraffe breeds and breeding. There is a shop with giraffe-related gifts, and a vast amount of literature. A cafeteria facility is on site too.
