Jaisalmer Fort (Jaisalmer, India)

Jaisalmer Fort is the second oldest fort in Rajastan in North West India and dominates the desert city of Jaisalmer. It stands on a hill at the centre of the city and offers views across the Thar desert for many miles around. The fort was built in 1156 by Rawal Jaisal, the Bhati Rajput ruler who gave the city its name. The fort is also known locally as ‘Sonar Kella’ or the Golden Fort. Unlike many of India’s fortresses which are now preserved as museums or lie in ruins, the fort in Jaisalmer is very much still a living city and is said to be the only living fort in the world. Approximately one quarter of Jaisalmer’s population live within the walls of the fort, though in the past everyone lived inside before the population grew too big to be contained within. Historically it was an important trading point and the focus of many battles. When the fort was seized in the 13th century the women of the city committed suicide to avoid dishonour at the hands of their invaders. Access to the fort is free of charge and highlights within the walled city include the royal palace, several temples of different religions and the havelis (large houses) of wealthy tradesmen.
