La Bambouseraie (Générargues, France)

The bamboo collection was started by the spice millionaire Eugène Mazel in 1855 and taken over by the Nègre family in 1902. The climate is good for bamboos but bringing sufficient water to the site was expensive. The garden has an extensive collection of plants, 150 species in almost 100 acres, and runs the world’s largest bamboo nursery. Giant sequoias and rare exotic plants are also on display, as is a village of huts made from bamboo. The location has been often used for film sets. There is a shop on site where plants can be purchased. The garden is open from 1 March to 15 November from 9.30am. Closing times vary during the year. Allow 1 1/2 hours. Guided tours are available and there are audio information points throughout the garden.
