Former capital of the Order of Teutonic Knights and the seat of the Grand Master, this monumental Gothic defensive castle complex (13th - 15th centuries) encompasses the Lower Castle, Middle Castle with its Palace of the Grand Master, and the High Castle. Everything is surrounded by defensive walls with towers and gates. There is also a museum with historical and artistic exhibits, including an amber collection. Outdoor “light and sound” shows are organized in the courtyards in the summer. The castle is on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage List and is the largest brick castle in the world. Opening times might vary, but generally 9 to 5 in the summer (May-September) and 9 to 3 in the winter (October-April). Grounds and non-guided castle areas are open longer. CLOSED ON MONDAYS! Check the website (under ‘charges’) for opening times and current prices. The admission price includes a guided tour of the parts accessible only with a guide. Concessions operate for children and students.
