The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is located next to the Tidal Basin and directly across from the Jefferson Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, DC. It honors the memory and accomplishments of arguably the principal leader of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. The physical address of the memorial (1964 Independence Avenue, SW) deliberately incorporates the year the Civil Rights Act was enacted–1964. The memorial consists of three pieces of monumental sculpture that, taken together, form an idealized mountain–a ‘Mountain of Despair’ representing the racial bigotry and injustices against which King struggled. The two pieces at either end serve as the formal entrance to the memorial. The center portion has been moved forward into a central plaza to represent the ‘Stone of Hope’ for a more just future. King’s likeness has been sculpted on this center section of the ‘mountain.” The Inscription Wall that surrounds the memorial site includes a number of quotations from King’s public life. In addition to the memorial itself, the site includes a visitor center and gift shop.
Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial is a top attraction in Washington D.C., known for its unique features that attract numerous visitors each year.
