Oktoberfest is a two week long beer festival taking place in Munich every year, usually between the end of September and the beginning of October. The festival is one of the most important events for the city of Munich and it attracts millions of people every year (in 2007 6.2 million) making it the largest fair in the world. Oktoberfest is also very important for local breweries in Munich. Around 30% of their annual production is consumed at the festival - altogether the breweries sell over 6 million pints of beer. A special pint for Oktoberfest is produced in a one-litre pint. The festival hires over 1,600 waitresses to serve the festival guests. Food is also an important part of the festival, over 50,000 Pork knuckles are consumed every year. Local breweries from Munich (for example Spaten, Augustiner, Paulaner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräuhaus and Löwenbräu) sell their products in large tents. The biggest ones have seats for over 10,000 customers - altogether Oktoberfest has seats for over 100,000 people. The tents have orchestras playing traditional German music throughout the festival.
