Oradour visitor centre (Oradour-sur-Glane, France)

On Saturday 10th of June 1944, soldiers from a SS regiment entered the village of Oradour-sur-Glane. They rounded up the population, a total of 642 men, women and children and led them to different parts of the town, the women and children to the church, the men to a number of barns. Then they proceeded to kill them. The village was never rebuilt, but left in its ruined state as a memorial, and the new village of Oradour-sur-Glane was built nearby. Visitors access the ruins through the ‘Centre de la Mémoire’ opened in 1999 to serve as an introduction to the visit. Visit of the ruin and parts of the visitor centre is free, the charge above applies to a section of the centre which shows a film in French (English translation available) and provides other background information. The centre opens at 9 am and closing time varies throughout the year between 5 pm (in February and from November to the 15th of December), 6 pm (from March to the 14th of May and from 16th September to the end of October) and 7 pm (from 15th May to 15th September). The centre is closed between the 16th of December and the 31st of January.
