Pont Vieux (Carcassonne, France)

The old bridge spans the river Aude and traditionally linked the upper and lower parts of the town. Peace treaties were signed here after various dissensions between the inhabitants of the two parts. There has been a bridge here as long as there has been a town - since Roman times. The first stone construction was finished in 1320. It needed a special tax to fund it, and the arches were of varying sizes as they were built when funds allowed. Restoration in 1820 changed its appearnace to what we have today. In 1999 work was undertaken to restore some of the original design and this has meant the facade of the former royal sheet factory at the east end of the bridge can be properly seen. The Chapel of Notre Dame de la Santé at the other end , all that remains of the old town hospital, is a good example of 15th century architecture despite interior and exterior restorations. The bridge is a good viewpoint from which to appreciate the fortified town.
