The St Calixtus Catacombs are the name given to a series of underground burial chambers dating from the second century AD, they are located within Rome’s official cemetery. The name derives from Deacon Callixtus who was appointed as the administrator of the cemetery by Pope Zephyrinus in the third century. The catacombs form a part of a complex of tombs that cover an area of around 90 acres and include over 19 kilometres of underground tunnels arranged in four levels. Within the complex are the burial sites of sixteen different Popes as well as many Christian martyrs and other notable figures. Many of the tombs have only been discovered in the last few decades and it is thought that many others remain undiscovered. Many of the early Christian tombs feature fresco’s and religious scenes of art, since the earliest of these date from before 400AD they are considered to be very important examples of early Christian art.
