The Alnwick Gardens were created from an area of derelict land adjacent to the Castle in Alnwick, Northumberland. The 12 acre site was donated by the Duke of Northumberland to a charitable trust which is administered by the Duchess. Landscaping began in 2000 and phase I, designed by the Belgian father and son team Jacques and Peter Wirtz, was developed around the Grand Cascade a water feature which flows through the whole garden. Phase II includes the Pavilion and Visitor Centre designed by architect Sir Michael Hopkins. The café facilities look like a tree house. The Gardens were opened by HRH The Prince of Wales in 2002. The Gardens have been designed to be wheelchair friendly. There is ample parking in the off street car parks near the Castle. Opening: Daily except Christmas Day April, May, October: 10am 6pm June September: 10am 7pm November March 10am 4pm Tickets: Adult: £8.00 Seniors: £7.50 Children: No charge Although adjacent to the Castle there are currently no combined visitor tickets shared between the two sites.
