The Golden Temple (Amritsar, India)

The Golden Temple of Amritsar is the holiest temple of the Sikh religion. It was built at the instigation of the fourth Guru, Ram Das, with construction taking place between 1589 and 1601 when it was completed under the sixth guru. The upper floors and gold cladding were added by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. The Temple sits at the centre of a large ‘tank’ or water pool and is reached by a 60m long marble causeway. The holy book - the Guru Granth Sahib - is stored at night in the building at the other end of the causeway called the Akal Takht and musicians and singers recite the holy book from early in the morning through to late evening when the book is put to bed. Visitors to the temple are always welcomed regardless of their religion. The Guru ka Langar is a free kitchen where all visitors can receive a simple free meal cooked by volunteers from donated food. The temple complex is kept spotlessly clean by hundreds of volunteers. Just inside the northern gateway is the entrance to the Central Sikh Museum which contains armour, paintings and artifacts from the early days of the religion. Entrance to the temple and museum is free of charge. Shoes must be removed and heads covered
