The Khajuraho Temples (Khajuraho, India)

The Temples at Khajuraho were built between 950AD and 1050AD on three sites around the village of Khajuraho. Of the 85 temples built over this period, 22 remain of which just one or two are still actively used for worship. The temples are of varying size and style and are considered to represent a height of Indian art and design. The larger temples in particular are decorated with rows of sculpted figures representing people and deities, carved in intricate detail. The Western Group of Temples is the largest and best known, containing eleven temples including the largest and most ornately carved Kandariya Mahadev, and also Chaunsat Yogini, the oldest. In the smaller, Eastern Group of Temples, six survive and there is a small museum just outside the temple complex. The Southern Group of temples, 5km to the south of the village, is the least visited. Although the temples are best known for their “erotic sculptures”, most of the scenes depict musicians , hunters, warriors and people in every day activities, from talking and dancing to putting on make up and letter writing. The Khajuraho Temples have been declated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
