The Zoological Gardens of Schönbrunn are located within the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, which was the former residence of the Austrian Royal Family. It dates back to 1745 and claims to be one of the oldest zoos in the world. Empress Maria Theresia, the wife of Franz Stephan of Lorraine who later became Franz 1, had the zoo designed by the architect Jean Nicholas Jadot de Ville-Issey to initially house a small private collection of exotic animals. In 1752 the zoo was opened to the public and quickly drew crowds from many miles around, by 1781 elephants, bears and wolves had been added to the collection and by 1800 there were kangaroos, big cats and hyenas. Today the Zoological Garden of Schoenbrunn is a major tourist attraction in the city. A range of different ticket prices and packages are available, which include tickets that allow entry to both the zoo and the palace. Full details of admission prices and opening hours are available on the website.
