The Affenberg (“monkey mountain”) at Salem near Lake Constance is a zoo devoted to Barbary Macaques. It is home to more than 200 of them which are free to roam with no enclosures in a 20 hectare forest area with footpaths for visitors to follow. Specially prepared popcorn is distributed free for feeding to the monkeys. As well as a visitor attraction, the zoo provides ideal conditions for scientific observation and conservation, and many have been reintroduced to their native north Africa. The zoo also has a large pond which is home to water birds and carp, and a colony of white storks has chosen to settle here every spring and summer to raise their young before migrating to Africa for the winter. There is also an enclosure of fallow deer. Staff are on hand to provide explanations, especially at feeding times. There is also an information centre, a photo gallery of monkeys from all over the world, a self-service restaurant and a play area. Parking is free. Opening times are daily from 15 March to 1 November 9am to 6pm.
