Brandenburg Gate (Berlin, Germany)
Brandenburg Gate is one of the most well known landmarks in Berlin, located on the western side of the city centre and near to the Reichstag. It is one of the most famous landmarks in Europe. It was built between 1788 and 1791 by Carl Gotthard Langhans and commissioned by King Frederick William II of Prussia as a symbol of peace but the gate was used during the years of Communism and integrated into the Berlin Wall. Since the wall was demolished in 1989 the Brandenburg Gate has become a symbol of reunion of both sides. The gate has five passageways but the citizens were only allowed to use the outer two in the past. On top of the gate is a Quadriga which is drawn by four horses with the Roman goddess of victory called Victoria. The Quadriga was removed in 1990 for renovation by the East German authorities. In 2000 the gate was refurbished by a private company. Nowadays the gate is closed for traffic and has been turned into a pedestrian zone.
