Golden Lane is in the complex of buildings forming Prague Castle. It is a street of 16th century houses built into the fortifications, which were the home of artisans working at the castle. Originally these were probably goldsmiths, hence the name, but later Emperor Rudolf II allowed the castle fusiliers to live there. Rudolf was also interested in science and alchemy and it is thought that some of his alchemists made their home in the Lane, another possible source of the name. More recent famous inhabitants include Franz Kafka, who lived at no. 22 for a short time in 1916, and the Nobel prize winning writer Jaroslav Seifert. The houses were acquired by the State in the 1940s and restored. Visitors find the row of brightly painted, tiny houses in a cobbled street charming. Today they are still inhabited by artisans, but of the tourist souvenirs type. Access to Golden Lane is by one of the ticket options for Prague Castle. Visitors can select which group of buildings they want to visit, and for this purpose Golden Lane is a “building”. Opening hours are 9am to 6pm, April to September, and to 4pm October to March.
