Keble College is one of Oxford University’s most distinctive architectural buildings and was built in Victorian Gothic design. The architect was William Butterfield and his design of layered red bricks was said to reflect his desire to “give dignity to brick”. The college was established in the 1870s as a tribute to the memory of John Keble, a Victorian clergyman. The college sits on a 4.5 acre plot on Parks Road, close to most of the University’s science departments, the University Museum and the Parks. The most famous building at the college is the chapel which is open to the public for private worship and public services. The chapel is home to William Holman Hunt’s famous painting “The Light of the World”, a copy of which also hangs in St Paul’s Cathedral in London. Outside term time, the college welcomes visitors every afternoon between 14.00 and 17.00 however, private events sometimes mean the college may be closed so visitors are advised to call ahead to check opening times and avoid disappointment.
