Leh Palace (Leh, India)

Leh Palace sits high on a mountainside overlooking the city of Leh. It was built in the 17th century and - depending on which sources you read - was either the influence for Tibet’s Potala Palace in Lhasa or was a copy of that palace. At it’s height the palace had 9 storeys and was lived in by the local royal family who were sent into exile in the 18th Century. The palace is not in great condition and there is an on-going programme of repairs and renovation. If the palace is open, the fee for foreigners is 100 Rp but even if it isn’t open, the hike up the mountain side is well worth it for the views over the city and as a practice walk for your acclimatisation to the altitude.
