The Sangkar Gompa (or monastery) is located in a quite area on the outskirts of Leh city, tucked away behind a stupa in the midst of farmers’ houses and fields. There are no grand entrance signs - just the name scrawled in paint on the door will help you to know you are in the right place. It can be reached in about 30 minutes from the centre by walking along narrow pathways but as maps are hard to find, you’d be advised to get a local guide to help you find it. The monastery is a branch of the Spiluk monastery and is run by the Geluksp school of Tibetan buddhism. The monastery takes the form of a courtyard with gardens in the middle. On entering the main area for worship, visitors will find beautiful paintings and statues. Whilst there is no formal entry charge, a donation would be welcomed. Prayers are held in the early morning.
