The Museum of Sydney opened in 1995 in a modern building which was built on the site of the first Government House, home to the first Governor of the colony. The foundations of that building are preserved in the lobby of the museum along with artefacts from that time. The museum introduces visitors to the people who were the first settlers to the colony through the items they brought with them, the things they traded and artefacts of the early colony. There are displays about the early trading ships, biographies of the nine early governors of New South Wales, recordings of ‘storylines’ which are factual or fictional accounts of the experiences of the early settlers and other items relating to the early history of the colony. For the 20th century coverage, displays include information about the evolution and demise of the city’s tram system and the building of the Sydney Opera House. Opening Hours are daily 9.30 am to 5.00 pm every day except Good Friday and Christmas Day. Standard admission fees are AU$10 for adults with concessions and family tickets available.
