The Art Gallery of New South Wales is one of Australia’s most important art galleries and is the most significant art museum in both Sydney and New South Wales. The museum’s collections include works by Aboriginal artists and other local Australian painters and sculptors as well as art from Europe, Asia and the Middle East. The main gallery building was constructed between 1896 and 1909 to a design by the architect Walter Vernon although there are later additions. The gallery has both a formal restaurant and a more casual cafe with an outdoor terrace. The gallery is located on the edge of the park known as The Domain. The nearest metro stations are at St James or Hyde Park, each about 10 minutes walk away. Opening hours are daily from 10am to 5pm with late opening on Wednesday until 9pm. It is closed on Good Friday and Christmas Day. Entrance to the main gallery is free of charge though some of the special temporary exhibitions carry a fee.
