Saint James’s Palace is one of many Royal Palaces in London. It is one of the capital’s oldest palaces and stands on the site of a former leper hospital (from which it takes its name) which was abandoned in 1532. It was King Henry VIII’s second palace after Whitehall Palace, but became the main palace of the monarch in 1698 when Whitehall Palace was destroyed by fire during the reign of King William III and Mary. However, no sovereign has lived here for over two centuries following the construction of nearby Buckingham Palace, although it still remains as an official residence of Her Majesty the Queen. It is currently the home of the Princess Royal (Princess Anne). The main entrance to Saint James Palace is on Pall Mall. The palace is not open for visitors and can only be viewed from Pall Mall or The Mall. The nearest Underground station is Green Park on the Piccadilly Line.
