Swanscombe Heritage Park, in the town of the same name, has been built in the former gravel quarry where the famous Swanscombe skull was found. These bone fragments, found in 1935, are the second oldest human remains found in the UK, dating back 200,000 – 300,000 years to the palaeolithic era. The area has also produced many palaeolithic hand axes suggesting large-scale production and settlement here on the banks of the Thames. Despite its archaeological importance the quarry workings were left largely derelict until 2005 when co-ordinated action by interested groups and local authorities enabled the Heritage Park to be constructed. The quarry has been landscaped, interpretative trails laid, and pillars mark the spots where the skull fragments were found. A large iconic sculpture of a hand axe stands at the entrance. The site is protected as a National Nature Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest. The Park is open all the time and access is free.
