The Needles Battery consists of both the Old Battery and New Battery and is located near Totland on the westerly point of the Isle of Wight. Dating from 1862 the fort was designed to defend against naval attacks from France. A 65m tunnel which leads from the parade ground to a searchlight emplacement was dug in 1885. The chalk outcrops surrounding the Needles Battery provided protection against land invasion and access was made possible via a retractable bridge. Details of how to get there as well as visiting hours and tariffs can be found at the website. Due to steep and uneven paths access may be difficult for disabled visitors. Parking is available and facilities include a tea room as well as a souvenir shop and kiosk.
