Tierpark Hellabrunn (Munich, Germany)
Tierpark Hellabrunn is usually referred to as Munich Zoo in English. It is located on the banks of the River Isar in Munich. It is the city’s principal zoo and covers an area of around 36 hectares. The history of the zoo dates back to 1905 when the architect Emanuel von Seidl designed it but it didn’t open to the public until the August of 1911. During Germany’s period of high inflation the zoo was closed in 1922 and remained closed until 1928 when it was re-launched as the world’s first Geo-Zoo. This was a controversial period of time for Munich Zoo, which engaged in the breeding of extinct species like the Heck cattle by crossing Aurochs and Tarpans. In 1970 the zoo was refurbished and extended and today it is home to about 7,700 animals comprising of around 340 different species. Munich Zoo is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the city and receives around 1.5 million visitors each year.
