Wat Phra Kaew (Bangkok, Thailand)

Wat Phra Keo is the most sacred temple in Thailand, it is known in English as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and is located within the grounds of the Grand Palace in the Bangkok district of Phra Nakhon. Construction of the temple began in 1785 under the reign of King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke. The Emerald Buddha from which its name derives was a gift from Cambodia in the 15th century, when it was presented to the King of Ayuttaya in 1434, some believe that it originates from India although its exact age and origin is unknown. Unlike most temples Wat Phra Keo was built entirely for decorative reasons and does not contain any living quarters for monks. Today it is a major tourist attraction in the city. Admission to the temple is 20 Baht (0.5 Euro) per person otherwise it is included within the admission price for the Grand Palace. A strict dress code of long trousers is enforced for anyone visiting the temple and long trousers can be hired at the entrance for those that arrive without them.
