Liverpool is full of surprises and The Albert Dock has to be up there with the most unlikely of them. It was originally named after Queen Victoria’s hubby, Prince Albert. Then, it was heavily bombed during World War II and basically left to rot. Eventually, the spirit of Liverpool kicked in, as it so often does and, helped somewhat by The Beatles popularity, The Albert Dock has seen massive investment and has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site with waterside hotels, nightlife, and other attractions. In 2018, royal approval was granted and the complex became the Royal Albert Dock.
If you think that you’ve got a rotten employer; a trip to the International Slavery Museum will put a spring in your step when you see how others suffered due to England’s involvement in transatlantic slave trade. Tate Liverpool is free to access and enjoy, and Merseyside Maritime Museum has many a tale to tell. As for the surrounding area; you don’t need that famous Ferry ‘Cross the Mersey today when, close to The Albert Dock, is the Queensway Tunnel. This leads to Birkenhead and the glorious North Wales coast.
About a mile from Albert Dock, Cuba comes to Liverpool at Alma de Cuba with Saturday’s Samba Afternoon Teas. Less than half a mile away, Liverpool One is a prestigious shopping mall.
Scouse is a Liverpool slang which, if you are staying near Royal Albert Dock for more than a couple of days, you’ll be able to speak fluently. Because of the city’s historic importance as a port, it is now home to a number of nationalities. Scouse then, is also a Norwegian-type stew which you can still enjoy in restaurants near Albert Dock. This city is famous for its comedians and the Irish influence and humour quickly ensured that the strikingly modern Metropolitan Cathedral became known as Paddy’s Wigwam. It is, though, well worth a visit; as are the Grade II Listed buildings, museums, and art galleries that are greater in number than any UK city outside London.
Areas along the famous River Mersey are great for bird watching, although no one has ever seen Liverpool’s famous Liver bird. Actually, it is mythical, but it stands symbolic on top of the Royal Liver Building at the Pier Head.
If you fancy something different, consider the Titanic or Batman-themed floating apartments to be found in or near Royal Albert Dock; or maybe re-kindle those memories of the Beatles, four miles away at the Penny Lane Hotel. On the other hand, Holiday Inn Express Liverpool is as near to Albert Dock as is it’s possible to get, followed closely by the ibis Liverpool Centre Albert Dock Hotel. For self catering, the Epic Apart Hotel and the Staybridge Suites are both only a very short walk away. Also in the immediate dock vicinity is the popular budget value for which Premier Inn Liverpool City Centre is recognised.
Slipping back into the Liverpool vernacular, the best advice is, if you want nice warm hotels, not Baltic, with comfy beds and great scran; don’t swerve trivago ‘cos they’ve got the best choices by far.
