Tate Liverpool was the second of the Tate art galleries to be founded and takes its name from Henry Tate of the Tate and Lyle sugar company. The more well known and first gallery is in London and is now known as Tate Britain, not to be confused with its more modern sister, Tate Modern. Tate Liverpool was founded in 1988 and is situated in an old warehouse on the Albert Dock, overlooking the Mersey in one direction and the dock – with views across to the Anglican cathedral – in the other. Tate Liverpool is a modern art gallery with both permanent and temporary exhibitions. Entrance to the main gallery is free but special exhibitions charge fees. The gallery is open 10.00 to 17.50 every day with last admission to special exhibitions is at 17.00.
