Chelsea Physic Garden in London was founded in 1673 by the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries who used it as a training place for apprentice apothecaries who needed to learn about the medicinal properties of plants in an age before modern medicine. The location in the centre of London was chosen due to its proximity to the Thames which enabled more tender non-native plants to survive. The garden evolved and developed a range of different environments best suited to different types of plants. The Garden is open on Sunday, Wednesday to Friday and Bank Holidays from 1st April to 30th October and standard opening hours are from 12.00 to 17.00. Entrance fees are £8 (€9) for adults and seniors with a reduced fee of £5 (€) for students, children and the unemployed. Disabled access is possible but the management suggest to phone ahead for more details of the best routes before arrival. A cafeteria offers refreshments.
