Elizabeth Bay House is one of the museums that is administered by the Historic Houses Trust and was once known as “the finest house in the colony”. Unfortunately Alexander Macleay, the senior civil servant whose vision it was to create this house, couldn’t afford the grand designs that he set in motion and he was declared bankrupt before his home was completed. The once grand and spectacular property with its extensive gardens fell into the hands of an artists colony and the land was carved up for further property development so that what remains today is a tiny proportion of its original estate. The house is considered the best example of a Sydney Colonial era property and is now open to the public on Friday, Saturday & Sunday from 9.30am to 4pm. It is also open daily in January and on public holidays with the exclusion of Good Friday and Christmas Day. The standard entry fee is AU$ 8 with reductions for children and families. Entrance is included in the Historic Houses Trust’s ‘Ticket Through Time’ scheme where a single fee covers all the houses in the scheme.
