Located in a prime position on the Thames, flanked by the iconic Big Ben, this is the seat of UK government. The complex is properly called the Palace of Westminster, reflecting the fact that it was once a royal palace, dating back to the time of Edward the Confessor. Over the centuries there were fires and attempted destructions but it was almost completely destroyed by a disastrous fire in 1834. What you see today was the rebuilding following that event. Westminster Hall was saved with its hammerbeam roof, the largest of its kind in Europe. This is where the trials of William Wallace (Braveheart), Guy Fawkes and Charles I took place. Sitting in the public gallery to listen to debates is free. Tours are available over the whole of the Palace, but exclude the Houses of Commons and Lords when they are sitting. Tours when parliament is in session are free, but you pay during the recess. Check the website for times and costs. There is access for the disabled. Visitors can also climb Big Ben, but you are warned that you need to be fit to tackle it as there are 393 steps. These visits are free but can only be arranged through your MP; there is no access for casual visitors, nor for the disabled. Non UK visitors need to be aware that there are restrictions on access for them: check the website for the up-to-date position.
