Lulworth Castle (Wareham, United Kingdom)

På platsen för Bindon Abbey lät Thomas Howard, andre hertigen av Norfolk, bygga ett palats när han 1575 fick en titel av drottning Elizabeth I. En bror till hans släkting Henry ärvde allt och lät bygga själva slottet. Det sägs att man ville få kung James I att jaga här på Isle of Purbeck. Slottet ser inte 1600-talsmässigt jakobinskt ut trots att det är från denna tid utan är istället väldigt medeltidsinspirerat. Familjens ägor utökades även genom annat arv och idag är det på en stor del av Lulworths mark man trampar för att se den vackra kuststräckan häromkring medan det även är slottet som driver både en camping och ett besökscentrum på sin mark runt Lulworth Cove och Durdle Door. Däremot ligger själva slottet ett stycke in i landet närmare byn East Lulworth och man ser den skyltade avtagsvägen när man kör mellan Wareham och kusten. Trots sitt medeltida utseende så har slottet moderniserats och fått fler rum ett antal gånger, faktiskt redan efter 1600-talets inbördeskrig den första gången och därefter både under 1700-talet och senast 1860 när arkitekt Joseph Hansom bland annat skapade en “gentlemens’ area” enligt den tidens anda. Idag kan man besöka en del av rummen inklusive slottets källare med kök i gammal stil. Man kan även se St Marys kapell i slottets park i vilket det är mässa under lördagskvällar och Lulworth är populärt för bröllop. I stallet från 1700-talet finns slottets café med enklare rätter samt en typisk “Sunday Roast” på söndagar. Här har man en fin utsikt mot havet från terrassen (om man inte hellre äter på byns gamla pub). Slottet håller öppet hela året men är stängt lördagar. Det är enklast att nå med egen bil eller cykel om man kommer under lågsäsong men man kan även ta taxi från stationen i Wool. Sommartid går det ibland buss från Dorchester och Wool till byarna runt Lulworth och de lokala turistbyråerna vet mer om detta inför varje säsong.
