If you think of an Indian garden, it’s likely that your mental image will be of exotic tropical flowers. That’s perhaps why the Rose Garden in Chandigarh is considered so special - it focuses exclusively on roses. The gardens are named after the former president, Dr Zakir Hussain, and were set up in 1967. They have become the largest rose garden anywhere in Asia and have more than 17000 plants set out in 27 acres of parkland. 1600 different rose varieties are present, each carefully labeled and named. In addition to roses, the park is planted with shady trees with emphasis on those with medicinal properties. There are ponds and fountains as well as some natural rivers running through the site. Visitors will find plenty of benches to sit on and nobody will chase them off the grass if they want to picnic. Opening hours are sunrise to sunset. Every February, the gardens host a yearly ‘Festival of Gardens’ which is considered an event of national importance.
