The Spinnaker Tower in Portsmouth opened in 2005 and is now a south coast landmark. At 170m it is the highest structure open to the public outside London, while its billowing sail design echoes its name and maritime links. From the viewing decks there is a panorama over the city, the historic dockyard, the coastline and out to the Isle of Wight. On a clear day visitors can see 23 miles. There are 3 levels of viewing decks. The first has “Europe’s largest glass floor”, the second has multimedia exhibits of the history of Portsmouth dockyard, and the third, the “Crow’s Nest”, is open to the elements. High speed lifts take visitors to the decks, or there are 570 steps. The decks are also used to mount events or special exhibitions. A café provides light meals and snacks. There are some limitations for visitors in wheelchairs and these are explained on the website. Opening hours are daily 10am – 6pm and to 7pm on Sundays to Thursdays in August.
