Unter den Linden (Berlin, Germany)

Unter den Linden is an avenue of about 1.5km in the centre of Berlin. It was originally built by the Great Elector Friedrich Wilhelm in 1647 to link his palace with his hunting park in the Tiergarten. In the 17th and 18th centuries as a major thoroughfare in the city many important buildings grew up along it and it retained its importance right up to the 20th century. When the Berlin Wall was built it was in the eastern sector but since reunification it has resumed its place as a prime attraction. The avenue runs west to east, from the Brandenburg Gate to the River Spree, crossing the Friedrichstrasse and Wilhelmstrasse, and on to the Museum Island. From here it becomes the Karl-Liebknecht-Strasse which continues on to the Alexanderplatz. Buildings along its length include the Hotel Adlon, now rebuilt, the Russian Embassy, the Berlin State Library, the Opera House, Berlin Cathedral, St Hedwig Cathedral. The Zeughaus, now the German Historical Museum, is the oldest building dating from the end of the 17th century. The “Linden” of the name refers to lime trees which were originally planted to form the avenue. New lime trees have recently been replanted.
