Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam, Netherlands)

Located in Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter, the Van Gogh Museum is home to the world’s largest collection of works by Vincent Van Gogh. The museum consists of two separate but adjacent buildings, the main building designed by architect Gerritt Roetveld (opened in 1973) and an exhibition wing designed by Kisho Kurokawa (opened in 1999). The museum houses a permanent collection that comprises 200 paintings, 500 drawings, and 700 letters by Van Gogh, including a significant number of pieces that were in the possession of either the artist or his brother at the time of his death. It also houses a collection of 19th-century works by Van Gogh’s contemporaries, including Delacroix, Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec , Millet, Lhermitte, Pissarro, Rodin, Suerat, and Monet. This extensive collection means that visitors have the opportunity to view a broad range of works created throughout Van Gogh’s lifetime and to do so within the context of some of the period’s best art. Museum facilities include an auditorium for special programs, a library, and dedicated space for temporary exhibits–as well as dining facilities and a gift shop. Special programs are also offered for children.
