Agra Fort (Agra, India)

The 16th Century Agra Fort is also known as the Red Fort or by it’s Hindi name ‘Lal Qila’ and stands in the city of Agra overlooking the river Yamuna on the opposite bank to the Taj Mahal. Six of the Mughal emperors - Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb - lived in the fort, from which they governed their empire. Although an earlier fort had been on the site for many centuries, it was Emperor Akbar who order it to be rebuilt in the red sandstone that gives it the name Red Fort. Akbar’s grandson, Shahjahan, lived in the Fort whilst supervising the construction of the Taj Mahal, the mausoleum to his much-loved wife, Mumtaz. He was later incarcerated in the Fort by his son Aurangzeb as punishment for wasting so much money on the Taj. The Red Fort is included on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites for its cultural and architectural importance.
