Bangla Sahib Gurdwara (Delhi, India)

Bangla Sahib Gurdwara is one of the most central Sikh gurdwaras (temples) in the city of New Delhi. It’s located on a quiet side street approximately 2 km south west of Connaught Place. The gurdwara was built in the place where the eighth Sikh Guru stayed during a visit to Delhi in 1644 whilst visiting Mirza Raja Jai Singh, the father of Maharajah Jai Singh who built the nearby Jantar Mantar observatory. The Guru blessed the water in the tank at the gurdwara and it was said to have cured people suffering from an outbreak of cholera and smallpox. The temple complex is home to a school, a museum, a library and a hospital. Visitors need to cover their heads, wash their feet and wear ‘modest’ clothing when entering the temple. A free communal kitchen or ‘langar’ offers simple meals to all visitors regardless of religion or nationality. Entrance is free and all are welcome to visit.
